Subject: Technicalities Resent-From: nystaff@agency.com Date: Wed, 29 Sep 1999 15:06:49 -0400 From: Mitch Golden To: "Staff (New York)" Technicaliies Sep 29, 1999 *) I am not a crook. Three straight weeks of Technicalities is more than most can take. John Caruso told me that getting away from these was one of his primary reasons for going into business for himself. People are starting to complain to Chan. And I know that I promised that I wouldn't send one of these each week. But the tech department is just overwhelming - more is going on here than even I reconned with. So, as the administration used to say during Watergate, "Previous statements are inoperative." *) Oh, baby! Oh, baby! By now you all know about Tim Appnel's daughter Kyla (http://i.am/babyapp/). Tim tells me that she is doing well, and he has given her a stuffed penguin for her crib. (Inside joke.) Well, as of this weekend there is a new member of the AGENCY.COM extended family. Eric Valinsky is the proud father of his second child. In a trend bucking move, the child has, AFAIK, no URL. >From Eric: Born: Saturday, 9/25/1999 6:56 pm 7 lb. 6 oz. Nikolas Russell Valinsky has a beautiful new baby sister, Francesca Davina Diamond (who we might call Frannie or Frankie). As some of you know, Carrie went into pre-labor Friday. Actual labor started at about 3:00 am Saturday morning. We went to Mt. Sinai Hospital at about 5:45 am, and Carrie delivered 13 hours later. It was a long labor, and Carrie did magnificently. All that ballet training really paid off. My cold also seemed to vanish, though it's back today. Thanks to so many of you for all the support you've shown in the last nine months, and your indulgence for the many pregnancy-related "crises" I had to rush out of work for. *) What is the sound of one hand clapping? I told you last week that the Sprint ION site was close to completion. On Friday, Tom Clarke told me that the site was "launched", that is, it was installed and fully functional on Sprint's server. This is actually no mean feat, since the site involves an eclectic mix of technologies, including both BEA Weblogic and Vignette Storyserver. Getting it all to hang together was a challenge that Tom, Laurence, and James O'Reilly tackled. My question is, What happens when you complete a web site, but the client has yet to tell anyone? Can you still have a FLAUNCH to celebrate? [They started sending out the e-mail to ION subscribers this week.] *) Multitalented Nerds Was it just me who noticed that on the last boat ride, half the band came from the tech department? I am frightened some times about the level of talent some of the people who work with me have. Tom Clarke can type Enterprise Java Beans from 10 til 7, and then go home and hit the keyboards. Eric Valinsky has a Ph.D. in music, and gives concerts that people pay to go to. Jeff DiBartolomeo played in the band at his own wedding. And Ralph Seaman can play everything from the accordian to the zyther. (And there may be others I don't even know about, or am forgetting. I'm sorry.) Now if we could only get them to remember to shut off their beepers before they go on stage.
